Collection: the Acequia Collection
⟡ A C E Q U I A ⟡ - pronounced 'ah-SEH-kee-yah'
This collection was made to honor the waterways that snake through Albuquerque and New Mexico. They are more than just ditches.. In the North and South Valleys, many properties and farmers depend on these communal sources of water to sustain their gardens, crops, and yards. You also see all sorts of life springing up along them, like centuries old cottonwood trees, dancing sunflower stalks, ducks and other birds, coyotes, raccoons, skunks and crawfish.
I grew up walking along them with family, friends and loved ones. There is something truly magical in hearing the rushing water along the acequias when the valves from the acequia madre are open. It feels like you are hearing the blood of the desert rush through Her veins, irrigating and nourishing so many of those that depend on Her.
Water is so sacred here in the desert and in the Southwest, and it is such an honor to be able to see these ancient ways of water distribution still in use today. I had community, respect for water use and the dynamic of monsoons with droughts on my mind when I was fabricating this collection.
